Government Polytechnic College, Kalamassery locates in an ideal place of Kerala. Kalamassery is in Ernakulam district which in the middle of Kerala. Among the fourteen districts there are six district towards south and six towards north and one beside. The High Court of Kerala is also located in Ernakulam district. Ernakulam district is the tropical middle of the Kerala State. Kalamassery is the satellite municipality of the District. The district is in the bank of Arabian Sea and it has a glorious historical past. The first foreign trader reached in India through Arabian Sea. The sailor Vasco de Gama reached in Kappad and after the accord with the Royal Saamoothiri, they shifted to Kochi. The fort by any foreigner in India is the Manuel fort by the Portuguese with the permission of King of Kochi. Kochi was the forerunner in spices trading in 15 century itself. Lots of small islands and lakes are in this beautiful place. Kochi is famous as Queen of Arabian Sea. The Boulghaty palace which constructed by the British is now a tourist destination. The Thrippunuthura palace, the residence of the then ruler of Kochi kingdom is near the Kalamassery.
All the three modes of conveyance are possible to this place. The Cochin International Airport is 15 km away from here. The Cochin Port Trust is just 8 km distance. Distance to the Ernakulam Town Railway station is exactly 5 km. A local station in Kalamassery is also providing train feasibility. Two major roads, including a National highway numbered 47, are the bus route towards this College. Seaport- airport Road is in the backside of the college. Besides this 4 more ring roads and subways make the movement much easier.
Another major transport facility near the college is Vallarpadam Container terminal. The construction of Vallarpadam Container Terminal is under progress. This terminal in intended for the shipment of heavy containers without parting contains. This will boost the arrival of commercial sailors in this Container Terminal. Cochin University of Science and Technology, the one and only one Technical University in Kerala is situating very near to this College. Two Medical Colleges named Amrutha Medical Science and Kochi Medical College are also located in this area. Apart from this a number of educational institutes are functioning in and around this place. Government Polytechnic College, Kalamassery is the cynosure of the locality.
Government Polytechnic College, Kalamssery, is within an industrial belt. The Aluva-Kalamassery area is the first industrial zone of Kerala. Trikkakara, the nearby Panchayath of Kalamassery is declared as the first special economic zone in Kerala State. There is a number of small scale industries and ancillary units. The major companies like HMT- the leading machine tool manufacturing company in Govt Sector , FACT- another Govt. company which produces Fertilizers and caprolactom , Binani Zinc- a company produce zinc, Thoshiba- leading battery manufactures, Apollo- the tyre manufacturing giant, Electronic Technology Park – a project of State Govt of Kerala, Kinfra- industrial development programme , Info Park- the information technology park of Kerala, Cochin Shipyard- A Central Govt. Industry for manufacturing and repairing the ships, Cochin Port Trust- the port authority, Cochin Refinery- the crude oil refining company under the Central Govt., Vallarpadam Container Terminal- a pioneer project of Central Govt. to improve the importance of Port trust. The project is about to commissioning, Hindustan Insecticides- the controversial Endosulfan producers are some among the list.
State Chapter of National Productivity Council is in the adjoining campus. The other institutions are Govt. Women’s polytechnic College, Industrial training institute and Food Craft Institute.
The other industrial giant, Cochin Shipyard is also very near to this Ploytechnic College. Ambalamukal, a booming industrial area of Ernakulam district is 17 km away from this place. NAD and the head quarter of southern naval command are in Ernakulam. Anna Aluminium, V-Guard etc are the other important companies surrounded this area.
Govt. Polytechnic College, Kalamassery has a state wide reputation in Kerala for excellence in academics. The spectra of engineering branches in GPTC Kalamassery include Automobile, Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Electronics and Production Technology and Computer Technology. Each branch functions in its own blocks which are well equipped with the most modern equipments which the students learn to use under the expert guidance of their faculty. Part Time Diploma course offered in Four Branches which will benefit the ITI holders working in nearby industries. 39 Lectures, with B.Tech/M Tech/M Phil/Ph D/NET Qualification, are supporting the students.

The college is well equipped to train the students to face the challenges with strong will once they are out of this institution and the infrastructures are being updated from time to time to suit the trends in the society. A main block and 3 annexure are being built to increase the infrastructure.
4.1 Internet, Wi-Fi facilities
The entire campus is wireless and designed for laptop use. The college has internet connectivity with 300mbps. There are dedicated computers in every department equipped with internet. These computers are also engage students to familiarize with specialized softwares in the respective branch of engineering. An internet facility centre is equipped for searching relevant information
The college has implemented ICT class rooms for all engineering branches. The instructor station of the smart class room is equipped with a laptop and an audio-visual projector. The teachers make it a point to use Power-point presentations, videos etc. to effectively convey scientific, technical ideas to the students. These class rooms are Wi-Fi enabled so that information can be obtained in a single mouse click. Ergonomic seating in the class rooms makes studying a pleasure for the students. An interactive board is erected and training to use it is scheduled.

4.3 Laboratories
There are 14 laboratory sections and one workshop is equipped for the practical purpose. Qualified and well experienced staffs are training the students and demonstrating the exercise. 18 Demonstrators and Workshop Instructors are here to perform
4.3 ISTE student chapter
A student chapter of Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) is active in the college campus to foster professional ideals and standards among the students. Students from this institution regularly participate in conventions, seminars and various competitions convened by ISTE and have won much recognition to the college.
4.4 The college BBC, VBC
Students of this college are encouraged to get involved in the sports they are interested in. Under the supervision of the dedicated physical trainer of this college, the students have won titles in district, state level competitions. The college posses’ state-of-the-art football, basketball and volley ball courts for the students. An open stadium with 400 m track is constructed in front of the college.
4.5 Library
Designed as a learning space for the student community, the college Library offers a range of best scientific and technical books. Around 2000 text books are available in the library. Technical journals, reference books in the library are handy to the students while doing project works, seminars etc. All books in the library are digitally catalogued so that the students can check the availability of the book through the computer installed in the library. An online library is on the making and will be realized in the near future. A committee is constituted to improve the facility of the library and to attract the students to spend more time in library.
4.6 Career Guidance Bureau
The career guidance bureau functioning in the campus is well equipped to help students regarding their academics/ career. The bureau keeps contact with industry and often invites them to the campus for regular recruitments from the campus. The college has successfully conducted talks from expertise from industry with the help of the career guidance bureau. The bureau keeps track of various available periodicals, internet to inform students regarding opportunities.
4.7 Finishing School
Recognizing the need for skill up gradation and specialized skill sets for generating qualified workforce, the college has set up a Finishing School at the campus. Activities of the finishing school include:
Activities of the finishing school are handled by the expert teachers of the college itself under the leadership of. The language lab of the finishing school needs a special mention wherein students' listening and speaking skills are improved by setting multimedia activities. These include:
Speaking and listening exercises with audio and video
Interaction through video conferencing etc.
4.8 Language lab
A language lab is sat up to improve the communication ability of the students. Students can interact with computers and they can correct they pronunciation as well as accent. Softwares are available to improve the transactional abilities.

Various amenity facilities are provided for the entire 1300 students as well as 151 staffs. Ladies retiring room is opened for the girl students and Ladies staff to res. Periyar Hostel is meant for boys and Pamba Hostel is using the staff. 28 staff quarter is provided for the staff to extend their service round the clock. A hygienic canteen is running in all the working days with subsidized rate food. An auditorium and one open auditorium are used to perform the activities of the students. The eligible students are availing the travel concessions for their journey. An efficient PTA is functioning and convenes the executive meetings in regular intervals.
The College consistently exhibits excellent academic performance in the past years. A table of records maintained in front of the main block to motivate the students. This year the percentage of pass is above 75. Last eight years performers are listed below.
7. NON REGULAR PRORAMMES
A number of non regular courses are running under various schemes. They are CEEP-Continuing Engineering Education Programme (IMPACT SSS).AICTE sponsored Industry Institute Partnership Cell (IIPC), AICTE sponsored Entrepreneurship Development Cell(EDC), AICTE sponsored MODROBS, JOB oriented courses in tie up with KELTRON under CEC. The revenue generated from these courses are effectively utilizing the progress and development of the College and keeping in the Govt. account.
